Creating a Hygiene and Clean Water Curriculum

We will be departing for East Africa in just two days and everything is coming together. One of the main objectives for the trip is to design and teach a curriculum that informs students about proper hygiene, sanitation, and the importance of clean water.  There are many existing curriculums that have been developed by other organizations, which has inspired us to create a hands-on  curriculum.  With the help of Mr. Wick and the staff at DSST, we are working hard to finalize this curriculum.

As students, we have never really written a curriculum designed to teach other students since we have always been the students.  This has definitely presented a challenge for us. It has really caused us to think about just how much thought and preparation goes into developing lesson plans and writing curriculum. What we are working on right now means so much to us because we know it will impact the lives of the students we are about to work with. Simply teaching students about washing their hands regularly or how to sneeze properly can go a long way and we believe that this information will then be spread amongst their family and friends creating a chain reaction. The most fun part of writing this curriculum has been working with each other to make it as hands-on as possible.  As we developed the curriculum we have spent a lot of time thinking about ways to make learning engaging and interactive so that what we teach really sticks with the students.

It feels like yesterday that we were talking with Mr. Wick about fundraising for this trip and now we only have two day until we discover a whole new part of the world filled with rich cultures and inspiring entrepreneurs. We are all very excited to share our experiences throughout the trip with you on our blog!
